With International Yoga Day on the 21st June 2018, we decided to look a bit deeper into the practice of Yoga and the best place to start is always at the origin.
When we hear the word ‘Yoga’, most of us imagine people twisting into mad crazy positions that we might not necessarily be able to get out from..... EVER....but fear not my friends the truth in Yoga delves far deeper than these poses/asanas and has many aspects that work together to guide us towards a deeper level of consciousness and ultimately your true self.
Yoga is derived from a Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which loosely means ‘union’ and originated +/-10 000 years ago in India.
Yoga was first mentioned in the oldest sacred texts, the Rig Veda. The Vedas were a collection of texts containing songs, mantras and rituals to be used by Brahmans (very important dudes), and Vedic priests. It is a path through which an individual unites with their entire existence. Sounds a bit heavy I know, but it basically means that you are not a separate entity but part of a greater energy force ... (sinking in ?) and as your Yoga practice evolves so will your consciousness and your path towards your true self.......
Even though the shape of the practice has evolved over the years the true goal of ultimately meeting your true self in your journey has remained the same.
Now that you have some basic knowledge about Yoga, you know that it is a practice with a deep rooted philosophy and science that uses the human body as a means to maintaining health through the most amazing journey of finding yourself and loving yourself wherever you are each and everyday!
Peace & luuuuurve
